ATLANTA, GA - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on May 10th that the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority [MARTA] as part of its transit expansion plan already funded by taxpayers plans 21 miles of light rail that would serve Emory University and the national headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control. Critics say that's not enough. But MARTA's board chairman says the $3.5 billion to be generated by a sales tax over 40 years is not enough to pay for all projects on the wish list.

BALTIMORE, MD - A 58-year-old man was killed by a Maryland
Transit Administration LRV Friday May 11th in downtown Baltimore,
the Baltimore Sun reports. Subsequent reporting revealed that the incident shut down a large section of Howard Street, where the tracks run, as well as commuter rail service through the downtown corridor. Medics responded after 8:30 A.M. to Howard and Clay streets for a report of a pedestrian struck, fire department spokeswoman Blair Skinner said. Police on Friday identified the victim as Timothy Mullins of Baltimore. A Baltimore Police spokesman , T.J. Smith, said it appeared the man was dragged by a southbound train on Howard Street for several blocks — struck somewhere between W. Mulberry and W. Saratoga streets and “ultimately dislodged” from the train somewhere south of W. Lexington Street. “It’s a large scene that spans several blocks, so our investigation is going to continue,” said the same Baltimore Police spokesman, about 10:30 A.M. “We apologize for the inconvenience, but understand that our investigators are right now at a loved one's house alerting them to the death.”

A notice was posted to the MTA website that said service between North Avenue and Camden Yards was temporarily suspended due to “police and emergency personnel activity.” MTA spokesman Paul Shepard asked pedestrians to give trains the right of way, as they “cannot stop on a dime.” Over the past five years, there have been 42 incidents in which a pedestrian was struck by a light rail train — six of which were fatal, the MTA said. The agency made shuttle bus service available to accommodate passengers between stations. Smith called the publishing of “disturbing” images from the scene to social media “completely unfair to this victim’s family,” and asked anyone with pictures or video from the scene to refrain from posting it on social media and to provide it to police investigators instead.

Boston public radio station WBUR reported on May 7th in favor of increasing the length of Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Green Line light rail system LRVs to increase ridership capacity. But the project would require $3.5 billion in infrastructure improvements. The Boston-based transit agency estimates it could take more than a decade to buy the longer LRVs and make station and other upgrades.

And after so many years of planning, the first of 24 new Green Line cars, dubbed type 9, arrived in Massachusetts during March 2018 for testing and is expected to join the Green Line fleet this summer, with a second car expected later this spring. More vehicles are expected to arrive through 2018 and 2019, said Jeff Gonneville, the MBTA’s deputy general manager. They will be numbered 3900-3923.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation board had approved a $118m contract on May 14, 2014 for CAF USA to supply these 24 light rail vehicles for Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s Boston Green Line, including the Green Line Extension project. About half of the cost is to be met by a Federal Transit Administration New Start grant. Deliveries were originally to begin around the end of 2017 until the end of 2018.
The 70% low-floor LRVs have been designated Type 9 by MBTA. They will have ‘dynamic computer-controlled lighting, heating and cooling’, and will meet the latest ADA accessibility requirements with four wheelchair/pram spaces. All priority seats will have space underneath to accommodate assistance animals or mobility equipment. CCTV will cover the passenger areas, doors and track.
CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) is to produce the body shells in Spain, with final assembly and testing at its plant in Elmira, New York, to comply with Buy America regulations.

Purchased as part of the $2.3 billion light rail expansion through Somerville, the new cars will go into service on existing Green Line branches. After several false starts, the extended line from Lechmere is slated to open in late 2021. And since the new cars will be in service long before they’re running to Tufts University or Union Square, that will allow the MBTA to take others out of service for maintenance without losing capacity on the system.
The CNN Money website reported on May 21st. that Boston-based General Electric agreed to sell an interest in its 111-year-old rail transportation business to Wabtech, formerly Westinghouse Air Brake, to help reduce GE debt. GE will retain 50.1 percent of the combined operation. GE locomotives are the freight power for many of the U.S. railways.

That followed the lead of the Fort Lauderdale city commission which voted earlier to scrap the planning effort because the low bid came in over budget. There is no alternative plan to replace the 2.8-mile streetcar line unlike Providence, Rhode Island, which voted down a streetcar line in favor of less costly bus rapid transit. The budget for the Florida project was $142.5 million and the low bid was $2.2 million above that.
LOS ANGELES, CA - Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. METRO) has narrowed the options to two routes through downtown for a proposed 20-mile light rail line to Artesia, which would represent a partial revival of the former Pacific Electric "Red Car" line to Santa Ana, the Los Angeles Times reported May 24 The proposal has $4 billion in funding but tunneling in downtown LA could leave a $1.8 billion funding gap. The Artesia route would branch off the Blue Line to Long Beach after Slauson Station.

The Green line is the LA Metro Blue Line (Long Beach) which has been in operation since 1990.
The Yellow line is the Gold line (Azusa) which has been in operation sionce 2003.
The Blue line is the Expo Line (Santa Monica) which has been in operation since 2012. |
The estimated completion is 2041 but Metro hopes a public-private partnership deal could have the line in service in time for the 2028 Olympics. The most costly route would attract 81,500 riders daily while the other would bring only 78,500. Eventually, the Artesia line could be extended to Santa Ana and is known officially as the West Santa Ana Branch.
